Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua

Ometepe is a volcanic island in Lake Nicaragua, located in Nicaragua. It is composed of two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas. It is considered one of the largest volcanic islands in the world. The island is a popular tourist destination known for its unique landscapes, biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore ancient petroglyphs, hiking through tropical forests and up the volcanos, swim in hot springs, and visit coffee and tobacco plantations. The island is also home to a number of indigenous communities and is a hub for eco-tourism activities. Read more about the two specific sites of the island as well as my proposals down here so you can start exploring Isla de Ometepe right away!

  2. Beaches: Relax and sunbathe on one of the island’s many black sand beaches.
  3. Eco-tourism: Take part in eco-friendly activities such as bird-watching, wildlife observation, and kayaking through the mangrove forests.

#1 What to explore on the left Volcano: Concepción

4/5

Start exploring Isla de Ometepe with Volcano Concepcion. Concepcion is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua. It is the highest point on the island, reaching an elevation of 1,610 meters above sea level.

The volcano is considered one of the most active in Nicaragua, with its most recent eruption occurring in 2010. Its eruptions can be explosive and generate pyroclastic flows, lahars, and ashfall. Due to its activity, access to the volcano is restricted, and climbers must obtain a permit and be accompanied by a guide.

Despite its activity, the volcano is also an important tourist attraction, with hiking trails leading to its summit and stunning views of Lake Nicaragua and the surrounding landscape. The island of Ometepe, on which Concepcion is located, is also known for its natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, making it a popular destination for ecotourism and adventure tourism.

#2 What to explore on the right volcano: Maderas

4/5

The other volcano on Isla de Ometepe in Nicaragua is called Volcano Maderas. It is also a stratovolcano, but it is considered dormant, with its last eruption occurring around 800 AD.

Volcano Maderas is slightly shorter than Concepcion, with an elevation of 1,394 meters (4,573 feet) above sea level. It is covered in dense tropical rainforest, which provides habitat for a variety of plant and animal species, including howler monkeys, parrots, and orchids.

The volcano is a popular destination for backpackers as well. This is due to its possibility for hiking and ecotourism, with leads to different forests, waterfalls and to a crater lake located near the top. The lake is a popular spot for swimming and relaxing after the strenuous hike up the volcano.

Together, Concepcion and Maderas form a unique and beautiful landscape for you to start exploring Isla de Ometepe right away!

Explore the island on a scooter!

exploring Isla de Ometepe on a scooter is the most fun and exciting way to see the island! There are several scooter renting points in Moyogalpa, with renters immediately promoting there rental place once you arrive with the boat from the mainland. I do however fully propose to you that you do this! The price: $15 per day! Make sure that you get this price and not more, because it is definitely doable and they will make you rent it for sure, due to all the competition that there is in Moyogalpa.
